This food had been a staple in our Manila home for years. I remember Mamu being able to finish six of them in one sitting. My brother on the other hand would not even wait for the wrapped lumpia and would get a plateful of sauted veggies and top it with the sauce, garlic and peanuts. I like it the way its suppose to be — delicately wrapped in homemade thinner-than-crepe wrapper, topped with sauce, finely chopped nuts and minced garlic.

During my 28th birthday party, I had a feeling they won’t be cooking in Manila the way Mamu used to do on my birthdays so I tried to re-create her recipe. This recipe seems like it takes a lot of prep time, but I tell you, the end result is all worth it! Besides, there’s probably only a handfull of Filipino dishes that doesn’t take a long time to prepare or that you don’t simmer forever! Diba nga, “Pag may tyaga, may sinigang! Este Nilaga pala! (Palibhasa fave ko sinigang, hehe)
